Common Core State Standards

An Introduction to Common Core State Standards

Educational standards describe what students should know and be able to do in each subject in each grade. In California, the State Board of Education decides on the standards for all students, from kindergarten through high school. The California Department of Education helps schools make sure that all students are meeting the standards.

PTA's School Smarts Parent Academy Pilot Program

Out of the 14 schools chosen throughout the entire state of California to pilot this parent academy, three of them are South City schools--Los Cerritos, Martin, and Skyline Elementary schools.  What an honor and how well deserved!  Parents at these academies learned about:

  • Parent Involvement
  • Preparing for a Lifetime of Learning
  • Understanding Our School System
  • Understanding Our School
  • Becoming an Effective Communicator
  • Standing Up for Quality Education
  • Taking Action and Celebrating Leadership.

We are proud of our parents' continued involvement in our schools.
