What is a Browser?

Wikipedia describes a browser as

"...a software application for retrieving, presenting and traversing information resources on the World Wide Web (Internet)

The major web browsers are Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer, Opera, and Safari."

SSF Unified uses web browsers for several purposes, including:

  • Access District webmail
  • Accessing our Student Information System, Infinite Campus for attendance, etc.
  • Accessing the Parent/Student Portal for student grades and parent communication
  • Accessing  DataDirector to evaluate student test data
  • District and School websites
  • and much more

Which Browsers Are Supported?

The default browser for the District is currently Internet Explorer.

We plan on adding Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome and expect this to be completed by the start of the 2014-2015 school year.

Which Browser Should I Use?

Use Mozilla Firefox for

  • Infinite Campus
  • SchoolLoop (portal)
  • DataDirector
  • Most other District apps that you access over the internet
  • General browsing

Use Internet Explorer (IE) for

  • Financial 2000
  • Any web application requiring support for proprietary Microsoft code
  • General browsing

Use Google Chrome for

  • The prefered browser for all Google apps
  • Bookshare or other applications that use extensions available only on Chrome
  • General browsing
  • A good backup browser in case you are having problems with IE or Firefox

Is There a "Perfect" Browser?

Most websites work with most browsers.  However, some websites will only work with a single web browser, and other work best with a particular browser.

Here are some examples:

  • Our HR application, Financial 2000, only works with older versions of Internet Explorer
  • Infinite Campus and DataDirector work best with Mozilla Firefox
  • Bookshare.org will work with any browser but only reads textbooks aloud if you use Google Chrome

As you can see, there is currently no "perfect" browser that can do everything, but most browsers can do most things.
