Dear SSFUSD Community,
As the impact of COVID-19 continues to unfold, we have received new updates from federal, state, and local agencies.
California State Superintendent of Schools, Tony Thurmond, announced that California school districts will continue with distance learning for the remainder of this school year, given current safety concerns. Superintendent Thurmond stated,
“Due to the current safety concerns and needs for ongoing social distancing it currently appears that our students will not be able to return to school campuses before the end of the school year. This is in no way to suggest that school is over for the year, but rather we should put all efforts into strengthening our delivery of education through distance learning.”
California Governor Gavin Newsom stated in his press briefing today that while schools are not open to students, distance learning will continue to be implemented.
As counties and districts throughout California seek to interpret the letter written by State Superintendent Thurmond, and Governor Newsom’s press briefing today, we will continue to work closely with the San Mateo County Health Department and San Mateo County Office of Education to ensure we provide essential support services for our students. San Mateo County Superintendent Nancy Magee, in collaboration with local district superintendents, has clarified that local public schools will remain open to provide distance learning, distribution of school meals, and other services as needed and feasible.
Please rest assured that we will continue to provide updates regarding any new information we may receive. While we are now preparing for school dismissals to continue through the end of the school year, we will also continue to provide at-home distributive learning (distance learning) and other essential services per our March 30th communication.
As a reminder, the update includes the following information:
- Current school and district hours (Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.)
- Communication Expectations
- At-Home Learning
- Graduation, Promotion, and Grades
- Technology Update
- Meal Distribution
We realize the rapidly evolving nature of these circumstances can be stressful and unsettling. It is our goal to continue to serve our school communities and to keep our students engaged through the at-home learning process. Through our collective support of one another, we will continue to navigate through these challenging times, and will be stronger as a result. Thank you for your patience and perseverance. Hemos recibido noticias de las agencias federales, estatales y locales sobre la situación del coronavirus (COVID-19).
El Superintendente de Escuelas del Estado de California, Tony Thurmond, anunció que los distritos escolares de California seguirán con el aprendizaje a distancia hasta el fin del año escolar a causa de la preocupación asociada con el coronavirus. El superintendente Thurmond declaró:
“Debido a las preocupaciones de seguridad y la necesidad de mantener la distancia personal, parece que nuestros estudiantes no podrán volver a las escuelas antes del fin del año escolar. Esto no significa que las escuelas han cerrado para el año, sino que debemos fortalecer los métodos necesarios para el aprendizaje a distancia."
