We are providing the following update to ensure you have the most recent information from federal, state, and local agencies.
Face Coverings When In Public
On Thursday evening, Bay Area health officials released a recommendation that residents cover their nose and mouth when leaving home for essential travel, such as doctor appointments, grocery shopping, and pharmacy visits.
In alignment with new guidance from the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the press release from the San Mateo County Joint Information Center also included the following recommendation:
“The face coverings do not have to be hospital grade but need to cover the nose and mouth. For example, bandanas, fabric masks and neck gaiters are acceptable. Fabric covers and bandanas can be washed and used again.
Health officials do not recommend that the public use medical masks (N-95 or surgical masks), which are in limited supply and must be preserved for our health care workers and first responders.”
Given the new recommendation, SSFUSD has established new expectations regarding those coming onto our school or district campuses. All students, employees, and visitors must wear a face covering when entering any school/district campus, building, or facility, including school/district offices. The face covering may be a mask, scarf, bandana, etc., in accordance with the above recommendation of our health officials.

SSFUSD Virtual Board Meeting
I wish to extend my gratitude to our community for participating in our very first virtual board meeting on April 2, 2020. One hundred participants were able to join the meeting, and many more wanted to participate but were unable to as a result of an electronic capacity limitation. We are working toward a solution to ensure that all community members who are interested in participating are able to do so in the future.
Please also know that we have heard your concerns and requests. We continue to interface with our staff multiple times a week, including ongoing virtual meetings, and will continue working toward the following areas of concern expressed during the Board meeting:
• Establishing more consistency across all grade levels
• Reiterating to our staff the importance of communicating and connecting with students on a weekly basis.
• Refining a process for our secondary students so they aren’t overwhelmed with work by all teachers
• Disseminating technology and internet access hot-spots as quickly as possible to ensure those in need have access to engage in at-home distributive learning.
We are prioritizing these items this week and will provide updates as soon as possible.
Several comments at the board meeting also pertained to graduation. Immediate decisions have not been made regarding graduation ceremonies, as we want to engage our community and provide an opportunity for feedback. Decisions about graduation and promotion cannot be taken lightly, as we recognize that these are momentous, special, once-in-a-lifetime events. Therefore, we want to provide an inclusive process that allows all voices to be heard. Our next step will be to determine the most feasible options, and then elicit your feedback and thoughts, which will be integral to making final decisions.

Máscaras en público
El jueves padaso, los oficiales de salud del Área de la Bahía recomendaron que los residentes se cubran la nariz y la boca cuando salgan de sus hogares para ir al medico o comprar comida o visitar a la farmacia y otras actividades similares.
El Centro de Información Conjunta del Condado de San Mateo también hizo la siguiente recomendación según las nuevas instrucciones del Departamento de Salud Pública de California (CDPH) y los Centros para el Control y la Prevención de Enfermedades (CDC):
“Las máscaras deben cubrirse la nariz y la boca y se pueden estar lavadas y usadas nuevamente. Por ejemplo, se aceptan pañuelos, máscaras y bufandas. Los oficiales de salud no recomiendan que el público use máscaras médicas (N-95 o máscaras quirúrgicas), porque los suministros están limitados y se deben estar preservadas para los que trabajan en los hospitales y los servicios de emergencia."
A causa de la nueva recomendación, SSFUSD tiene nuevas expectativas con respecto a los que ingresan a nuestras escuelas y oficinas. Todos los estudiantes, empleados y visitantes tienen que cubrirse la cara antes de entrar un edificio o instalación del distrito incluyendo las oficinas de las escuelas y del distrito. Una máscara, bufanda, pañuelo, etc. es acceptable según la recomendación de los oficiales de salud.
• Si no tiene una cubierta adecuada para la cara, los CDC han creado una guía explicando cómo hacer, usar y mantener una máscara.

Reunión virtual del consejo escolar de SSFUSD
Quiero extender mi gratitud a nuestra comunidad por participar en nuestra primera reunión virtual del consejo escolar el 2 de abril de 2020. Cien participantes asistieron a la reunión, y muchos más quisieron participar, pero no pudieron a causa de una limitación de capacidad. Estamos trabajando para encontrar una solución que permitirá a todos los miembros de la comunidad que lo haga en el futuro.
Hemos escuchado sus preocupaciones y solicitudes. Seguimos interactuando con nuestros empleos varias veces cada semana incluyendo via las reuniones virtuales, y seguirémos trabajando hacia las siguientes áreas:
• Establecer más consistencia en todos los grados.
• Reiterando a nuestros maestros la importancia de comunicarse con los estudiantes cada semana.
• Desarollar un proceso para nuestros estudiantes en las escuelas secundarias para que no se sientan inundados con la tarea.
• Distribuir los aparatos electrónicos para ayudar a las familias que no tienen Internet tan pronto como posible.
Estos puntos son nuestras prioridades esta semana y le proporcionarémos noticias tan pronto como posible.
Con respecto a las ceremonias de graduación, no hemos decidido lo que vamos a hacer. Reconocemos que los procesos de graduación y promoción son eventos trascendentales, especiales, y únicos en la vida. Por eso, queremos crear un proceso inclusivo que permita que se escuchen todas las voces. Nuestro próximo paso será determinar las opciones más factibles y luego escuchar a las observaciones de la comunidad que serán esenciales en la decision final.
