Dear SSFUSD Community,
I’m writing to inform you that our school board voted yesterday to keep our middle and high school students in distance learning for the remainder of the school year, while preparing for summer school and a fall 2021 reopening. Our district will continue to look for ways to serve middle and high school students most in need by expanding learning hubs and other measures. In the meantime, TK-5 students will have the option to return to campus for two hours of in-person instruction starting April 19, 2021.
We appreciate your patience and your advocacy and look forward to taking the next steps with you in our journey to bring students and staff back to campus safely.
In light of the devastating increase in violent crimes and disturbing incidents directed at the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities during the pandemic, especially toward the elderly, I feel that some national soul searching is once again in order.
These kinds of hateful actions and behaviors are disheartening and should be acknowledged and denounced. In SSFUSD, we value and embrace diversity in thought, culture, and perspectives. These events are antithetical to our school district's beliefs, cultural aspirations, practices, and policies of inclusion.
They serve as a reminder that progress in these areas requires tremendous diligence and conscientiousness, especially from educators, who bear a great responsibility to encourage, inspire, and lift up our future generations. Any type of violence or harassment directed against people because of the way they look is abhorrent to us. That is why I want to call upon our community to stand in solidarity with anyone who has been a victim of hate.
The past year has been extremely difficult. The COVID-19 pandemic has challenged us as a nation and community and exposed many long festering inequities in our society. It has also caused us to more actively confront the fact that systemic racism continues to play a significant role in our society.
Education is inseparable from the ideals of justice, equity, and inclusion. We believe that equity is the right of every student, staff, and community member, and that all students should be provided with what they need individually when they need it, so that they can fulfill their academic and personal potential. We seek to ensure equitable, inclusive, anti-racist policies and practices, and we are committed to holding ourselves responsible for the respectful conduct and treatment of one another.
On behalf of the SSFUSD school board, let us stand together with our AAPI students, staff, administrators, and community. For all of us who feel fatigued or discouraged by the events of the past year(s), I urge you to persist. Be patient. Endure. Stay strong. We are here for you, and our district will continue to treat everyone with respect no matter where they are from. We will stand by what we teach our students about diversity and inclusion. Quiero informarle que nuestro consejo escolar votó ayer para mantener a nuestros estudiantes de escuelas intermedias y secundarias en el aprendizaje a distancia hasta el fin del año escolar, mientras nos preparamos para la escuela de verano y una reapertura el otoño de 2021. Nuestro distrito seguirá buscando maneras de servir a los estudiantes luchando con el aprendizaje a distancia por ampliando los centros de aprendizaje y otras medidas. Sin embargo, empezando el 19 de abril, los estudiantes de los grados TK-5 tendrán la opción de regresar a las escuelas por dos horas de instrucción por la tarde.
Apreciamos su paciencia y temenos muchas ganas de tomar los próximos pasos con usted en nuestro viaje a traer a los estudiantes y empleados de vuelta a las escuelas en una manera segura.
A la luz del devastador aumento de los crímenes e incidentes violentos dirigidos a los asianos y los isleños del Pacífico durante la pandemia, especialmente hacia los ancianos, me siento que una vez más necesitamos volver a buscar el alma nacional.
Este tipo de acciones y comportamientos son descorazonadores y deben ser denunciados. En SSFUSD, valoramos y abrazamos la diversidad de pensamiento, cultura y perspectivas. Estos eventos son antitéticos a las creencias, aspiraciones culturales, prácticas y políticas de inclusión de nuestro distrito escolar.
Sirven como un recordatorio de que el progreso en estas áreas requiere una tremenda diligencia y trabajo, especialmente de los educadores, quienes tienen una gran responsabilidad de alentar, inspirar y elevar a nuestras generaciones futuras. Cualquier tipo de violencia o acoso contra las personas por su aspecto nos repugna. Por eso quiero pedir a nuestra comunidad que se solidarice con cualquiera persona que haya sido víctima del odio.
El año pasado ha sido extremadamente difícil. La pandemia de COVID-19 nos ha desafiado como una nación y comunidad y ha expuesto muchas desigualdades antiguas en nuestra sociedad. También nos ha forzado a confrontar más activamente el hecho de que el racismo sistémico sigue desempeñando un papel grande en nuestra sociedad.
La educación es inseparable de los ideales de justicia, equidad e inclusión. Creemos que la equidad es el derecho de cada estudiante, empleado y vecino, y que todos los estudiantes deben recibir lo que necesitan individualmente cuando lo necesitan, para que puedan cumplir con su potencial. Queremos asegurar políticas y prácticas equitativas, inclusivas y antirracistas, y estamos comprometidos a tratarse a uno a otro con respeto.
