Dear SSFUSD Community,
As the 2020-21 school year slowly draws to a close, I wanted to share with you our outlook for the 2021-22 school year. On April 6, California Governor Gavin Newsom announced plans to fully reopen California by June 15, 2021, provided that: (1) hospitalization rates remain low and stable; and (2) vaccine supplies are sufficient to inoculate any California resident 16 years and older.
Should California meet these targets, SSFUSD enthusiastically anticipates a full return to in-person learning with all students attending school five days a week beginning August 11, 2021. However, our district will continue to follow guidelines set forth by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), the San Mateo County Office of Education (SMCOE), and the San Mateo County Public Health Department.
At this time, it is our understanding that students, staff, and all visitors to our schools will be required to wear face coverings in conjunction with other possible mandates. We will continue to follow the health and safety protocols currently in place involving social distancing, health screening, handwashing, and ventilation if this remains the guidance from the CDPH and SMCOE. We truly appreciate your continued patience and flexibility as the COVID-19 pandemic situation may change. We will continue to update you on new information and expectations for in-person teaching and learning in the fall.
We recognize that some families may like their child to continue distance learning in the next school year. Unfortunately, at this time, it is our understanding that the state is not allowing this academic option for public schools in the next school year. Our district currently has an “independent study” option. However, the “independent study” program does NOT provide for the delivery of live, synchronous instruction and is more like completing and submitting work for grading and feedback without daily assistance from or interaction with a teacher, much of which will depend on staffing.
To assist us in our planning efforts for next fall, we would appreciate it if you could let us know your current plans for next year by completing the attached survey by 5:00 PM on May 21, 2021. SSFUSD is consistently seeking to enhance our students’ educational experience by eliciting feedback and analyzing what worked well this past year and what didn't. This will allow us to engage with students in new ways. We appreciate your feedback!
One thing that will remain constant, however, is our focus on educational equity and excellence. The pandemic has shown us ways in which we can link these ideals to things like our hiring practices, budgetary decisions, curriculum and instruction, and school safety and climate to better achieve equitable outcomes. These will be our priorities for the 2021-22 school year; more information on this topic will be forthcoming.
Finally, if you haven't already, please take some time to send a positive note of appreciation and affirmation to your child's teacher(s). Last week was teacher appreciation week, and we want to thank our PTAs for your kindness and generosity. We want to continue to celebrate their tremendous efforts as a community. While the past year hasn't been perfect, we are certainly thankful for having the opportunity to work with you to try to alleviate some of the challenges you may have experienced as a result of the constraints placed upon us by the COVID-19 pandemic. I remain deeply grateful, humbled, and privileged to work in a community with such caring, compassionate, understanding families. Please know that you are truly appreciated and valued.

Estimada comunidad de SSFUSD,
El año escolar 2020-21 está terminando y quiero compartir con ustedes lo que esperamos para el año escolar 2021-22. El 6 de abril, el gobernador de California, Gavin Newsom, anunció planes para reabrir California el 15 de junio de 2021 si (1) las tasas de hospitalización permanezcan bajas y estables; y si (2) hay suficientes vacunas para inocular a cualquier residente de California que tiene 16 años o más.
Si California cumple con estas metas, SSFUSD anticipa un retorno a las escuelas por los estudiantes comenzando el 11 de agosto de 2021. Sin embargo, nuestro distrito continuará siguiendo las pautas establecidas por el Departamento de Salud Pública de California (CDPH), la Oficina de Educación del Condado de San Mateo (SMCOE) y el Departamento de Salud Pública del Condado de San Mateo.
En este momento, los estudiantes, empleados, y todos los visitantes a nuestras escuelas tienen que seguir los mandatos de salud incluyendo el uso de mascaras, el distanciamiento social, el lavado de manos, la ventilación y la detección de fiebres. Nuestro distrito actualmente tiene un programa de “estudio independiente”. Sin embargo, el programa de “estudio independiente” NO provee instrucción en vivo y consiste en completar y someter tarea sin la asistencia diaria o la interacción con un maestro.
Para ayudarnos en planear el próximo año, les agradeceríamos que complete la encuesta adjunta antes de las 5:00 PM del 21 de mayo. SSFUSD constantemente quiere mejorar la experiencia educativa de nuestros estudiantes por analizar lo que ha funcionado bien el año pasado y lo que no lo hizo. Agradecemos sus comentarios.
Una cosa que permanecerá constante, sin embargo, es nuestro enfoque en la equidad y excelencia académica. La semana pasada fue la semana de aprecio de los maestros, y queremos seguir celebrando sus tremendos esfuerzos. Gracias también a los PTAs por su amabilidad y generosidad. El año pasado no ha sido perfecto, pero estamos agradecidos por tener la oportunidad de tratar de aliviar algunos de los desafíos que experimentaban a causa de COVID-19. Me siento profundamente agradecido, humillado y privilegiado de trabajar en una comunidad con familias tan cariñosas, compasivas y comprensivas. Por favor, sepa que ustedes son verdaderamente apreciados y valorados.
