Dear SSFUSD Community,
I hope you are having a wonderful summer and are taking good care of yourselves. We’re excited to let you know that SSFUSD is preparing to welcome all our students back for 100% in-person classroom learning beginning August 11, 2021. We are very excited about this long-awaited development and have taken several steps to ensure the health and safety of our students and staff when they return.
First, SSFUSD will continue to be diligent in our efforts to protect the health and well-being of our students and staff. As you may recall, our district deployed new, hospital-grade, mobile disinfection units that use ultraviolet C (UV-C) rays to eliminate 99.9% of viruses and pathogens from the air and physical surfaces. To optimize air flow and ensure the highest possible air quality, we also hired a firm to inspect the mechanical ventilation systems at each of our schools, and we had the HVAC Specialist in our District install the recommended MERV 13 air filters and make adjustments to the ventilation system at our sites to provide the maximum flow of fresh air into the classrooms. We will continue to follow the latest cleaning and disinfecting guidelines from the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) and require face coverings at all of our campuses regardless of a student’s or employee’s vaccination status.
Given that the global pandemic is not over, the Delta variant is still a concern, and many students are not yet vaccinated, the CDPH stated that universal masking both provides an important and needed layer of protection and keeps children from feeling singled out because of their vaccination status. Also, universal masking makes it possible for CDPH to lift physical distancing requirements. We will provide specific details of the safety measures for all schools in SSFUSD to school principals who will include that information in their beginning of the year communications. In the meantime, please help us ensure a safe school year for everyone by vaccinating yourself and your family members against COVID-19.
Second, I am proud to report that every SSFUSD student now has access to their own individual technology device to facilitate learning. This has been a goal of our district for many years. Consequently, we will maintain the use of certain online platforms such as Google Classroom and virtual tutoring services for grades 6-12 through Paper Education Company.
The COVID-19 pandemic pushed all of us to swiftly adapt to on-line learning. Through this process, we have discovered some aspects of on-line learning to be beneficial for students and staff and will be maintaining those. Per your feedback, we will also continue to utilize virtual options to engage our community and increase access and participation.
Academically, we realize how important it is to focus on key priorities of the California State Standards. Therefore, we will continue to assess students to truly understand their strengths and opportunities for growth, so we can accelerate learning for all. Once the fall 2021 semester gets underway, our district will also look to analyze our grading practices and the purposes and uses of homework in order to continue making equity a reality in our schools. As part of this initiative, we created a new equity, diversity, and inclusion committee. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic interrupted much of this work, but we are excited to refocus our efforts on this topic.
The COVID-19 pandemic also demonstrated the importance of building relationships with our students and forming positive classroom communities. Supporting our students’ mental, social, and emotional health will be another focus this fall. That is why we have hired a teacher on special assignment who will concentrate on developing social-emotional supports and curricula to improve school climate, belonging, and connectedness. We are also advertising to hire seven new wellness counselors for this next school year, more paraprofessionals, and a new full-time staff member who will implement restorative justice practices to decrease student suspension rates and increase student engagement.
We are aware that there may be a need among certain parts of our community to continue with virtual learning as an option, because some students and families either prefer it to traditional classroom instruction or have lingering concerns about COVID-19. Although we would like to be able to accommodate this request, we are not certain that we will be in a position to do so without further guidance and support from the State of California. There will be new restrictions on who is eligible to participate based on the information we have gathered thus far. We remain willing to continue exploring different options for students and if information changes in the next couple of weeks, we will notify you as soon as possible.
Lastly, based on the information we have available, athletics will begin under “normal” pre-pandemic circumstances in the fall. It’s shaping up to be an exciting year at SSFUSD! We will share more information with you as we learn it. I can’t wait to see you all in August. Enjoy the rest of your summer!

Espero que estén pasando un verano maravilloso y estén bien. Estamos emocionados de decirles que SSFUSD está preparandose para reabrir todas nuestras escuelas el 11 de agosto. Hemos esperado mucho tiempo para este momento y hemos hecho varias cosas recientemente para asegurar la seguridad y el futuro de nuestros estudiantes y el distrito.
Sin embargo, SSFUSD será diligente en nuestros esfuerzos de limpieza para proteger la salud y el bienestar de nuestros estudiantes y empleados. Seguiremos la directriz más reciente de limpieza y desinfección establecida por el Departamento de Salud Pública de California (CDPH). Cuando el semestre otoñal de 2021 empieze, nuestro distrito también analizará nuestras prácticas de calificación, los propósitos y usos de tarea escolar para hacer la equidad una realidad en nuestras escuelas. Como parte de esta iniciativa, creamos un nuevo comité de equidad, diversidad e inclusión. El inicio de la pandemia de COVID-19 interrumpió este trabajo. Sin embargo, la disponibilidad de vacunas significa que ahora tenemos la oportunidad de reanudar este proyecto.

Entendemos de que ciertas partes de nuestra comunidad les gustaría seguir con un programa de aprendizaje a distancia, porque quieren una opción virtual en lugar de la instrucción tradicional o tienen preocupaciones persistentes sobre COVID-19. Aunque nos gustaría satisfacer este deseo, no podemos hacerlo sin más orientación del Estado de California. Estamos dispuestos a explorar opciones diferentes para los estudiantes, pero por ahora solamente ofreceremos la instrucción en el aula en el otoño.
Por último, basado en la información que temenos ahora, los deportes comenzarán como “normal” en el otoño.
