Dear SSFUSD Community,
It has been about two weeks since we returned from spring break, and I hope that you all had a chance to rest and refuel and we look toward finishing strong in the last six weeks of the school year. As you may recall, our school board decided during its March 10 meeting to leave our district’s indoor masking policy in place until at least April 18, so that we could assess public health conditions and our community’s COVID-19 case rates in the wake of spring break.
Our COVID-19 dashboard shows that for the week of April 4, our district had a total of 12 COVID-19 cases, which represents a slight increase from the 11 cases reported during the week of March 21 before spring break. This week, as of Thursday, April 14, SSFUSD has had a total of 20 cases.
At last night's school board meeting, after much deliberation and discussion, input from the staff and some members of the community, the board voted in favor of transitioning to "strongly recommended," mask wearing. This decision aligns to the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) guidance. This decision will go into effect on Tuesday, April 19, 2022. For all intended purposes, this recommendation truly means that everyone should continue masking, especially indoors. However, we recognize that there may be some families and students who decide not to for various reasons.
While our district continues to focus on keeping schools open for in-person teaching and learning, we also pride ourselves on being inclusive and respectful of the physical, social, and emotional health of our students. With this transition to strongly recommended masking, we will continue to support and encourage anyone who wants to continue wearing their masks at school especially since it is strongly recommended to do so, and we will not tolerate any attempts to stigmatize or shame anyone based on their decision. I am proud to attest to the fact that our community has shown a capacity for patience and kindness, not just over the last two years, but for the entire time that I have been a part of the SSFUSD community. Therefore, I want to applaud you for your tireless focus on the well-being of our students and staff and for your commitment to treating one another with dignity and respect.
As we enter the home stretch of the school year, please take care to stay safe and healthy. For those of you who will be participating in Easter or Passover or Ramadan celebrations, please allow me to wish you a celebratory holiday in advance. Thank you all again for getting you and your child(ren) vaccinated and/or boosted against COVID-19. If you haven’t yet done so, multiple pathways are available through your health care provider, through CVS and Rite Aid pharmacies, the state’s My Turn effort, and the San Mateo County Health Department. Estimada comunidad de SSFUSD,
Hace dos semanas regresamos de las vacaciones de primavera, y espero que todos ustedes tenían la oportunidad de descansar mientras esperamos el fin del año escolar en seis semanas. Como usted puede recordar, nuestro consejo escolar decidió durante su reunión del 10 de marzo mantener la política de nuestro distrito de enmascaramiento adentro hasta el 18 de abril, para que podamos evaluar las condiciones de salud pública y los casos de COVID-19 en nuestra comunidad después de las vacaciones de primavera.
Nuestro tablero de COVID-19 muestra que para la semana del 4 de abril, nuestro distrito tuvo un total de 12 casos de COVID-19, lo que representa un aumento con respecto a los 11 casos reportados durante la semana del 21 de marzo antes de las vacaciones de primavera. Esta semana, SSFUSD tiene un total de 20 casos por jueves, el 14 de abril.
En la reunión del consejo escolar anoche, después de mucha deliberación y discusión, la opinión de los empleados y algunos miembros de la comunidad, el consejo votó a favor de una política donde las máscaras están “fuertemente recomendado”. Esta decisión se alinea con la directriz del Departamento de Salud Pública de California (CDPH). Mientras nuestro distrito seguirá enfocándonos en mantener las escuelas abiertas, también nos enorgullecemos de ser inclusivos y respetuosos de la salud física, social y emocional de nuestros estudiantes. Seguiremos apoyando y animando a cualquier que quiera seguir usando máscaras en la escuela, y no toleraremos ningún intento de estigmatizar o avergonzar a nadie sobre su decisión.
Estoy orgulloso de atestiguar de que nuestra comunidad ha demostrado una capacidad de paciencia y amabilidad, no sólo en los últimos dos años, sino durante todo el tiempo que he sido parte de la comunidad de SSFUSD. Por eso, quiero aplaudirles por su incansable enfoque en el bienestar de nuestros estudiantes y empleados y por su compromiso de tratar a unos a otros con dignidad y respeto.
