The event, which was organized by the school’s parent teacher association (PTA), helps students cultivate a love of science through hands-on, STEM-focused learning.

“Our aim is to engage our community in educational and interactive science activities while providing a platform for local organizations to share their valuable community resources,” said Spruce Elementary PTA Parliamentarian Jeanette De La Rosa.

While Mission Science Workshop was leading attendees through various science experiments, seventh grader Andre Escobar and some of his classmates from Parkway Middle School were also on hand to pass on their love of science to younger students through the medium of shaving cream art.

“We’re putting food dye onto the shaving cream, and then we mix it together, and then we put a piece of paper on top of it, and it makes a design,” said Andre.

Meanwhile, community-based organizations including the YMCA, the Gene Mullin Community Learning Center, El Concilio of San Mateo County, Housing Leadership Council of San Mateo County, and Familias Tomando Acción were dispensing information about programs that Spruce Elementary’s Spanish-speaking families could take advantage of.

“The PTA has been amazing in setting up a fun learning experience for families,” said Spruce Elementary School Principal Angelica Garduno. “It was so much fun to see all of our families doing the science experiments. We’re looking forward to many more years of this.”
