Open Enrollment

What is Open Enrollment?

Open Enrollment allows families living within SSFUSD to request a school other than their assigned school of residence.

Application Window

  • February 1 – April 15, 2026 for the 2026-27 school year

  • Applications must be submitted by 4:30 p.m. on April 15

  • Late applications are not accepted


Applications for the 2025-26 school year are closed

The application window for 2027-28 may be earlier, check back here in the fall for updates.

Before You Apply

  • New students: Must first register at their school of residence (save your 5-digit online registration number)

  • Moved recently? Update your address before applying - Residency Affidavit and Instructions / Spanish

  • Continuing students: May use this process to renew a temporary transfer

How It Works

  • Transfers are not first-come, first-served

  • Approval is based on:

    • Space availability at the requested school

    • Grade level capacity

    • Balance across school sites

  • If requests exceed available space for a particular grade level, a random lottery will be used

  • Sibling priority is given

When Will I Hear Back?

  • Most decisions are sent in late May

  • Kindergarten decisions are typically sent in early June

If Approved

  • Transfers do not need to be renewed annually

Important Reminders

  • Submit your application online by April 15 (4:30 p.m.)

  • Keep your contact information up to date

  • After-school program enrollment does not give priority

  • Waitlists:

    • No status updates are provided

    • Families are only contacted if space becomes available

    • Waitlists typically close in early September

    • Waitlists do not carry over year to year
