Transitional Kindergarten

What is Transitional Kindergarten (TK)?

Transitional Kindergarten (TK) is a program for children who turn 4 years old by September 1, 2026. It provides a bridge between preschool and kindergarten.

Eligibility and School Assignments

For the 2026-27 school year, students must be born between September 2, 2021 and September 1, 2022
TK classrooms are located at all elementary schools, including new classrooms at Monte Verde and Junipero Serra
Students are placed at their school of residence whenever possible
Transfers are not available for TK; your child will be assigned based on residence and lottery results
All TK placements are temporary; children will return to their home school for Kindergarten

How to Request a TK Placement

Parents will receive a “Form Complete” email once their placement request has been processed
Email notification of placement or waitlist status went out on or near March 9, 2026
Students will either be assigned a school or placed on a waitlist based on the lottery results
New applications received in March or later will be processed and parents should receive a “Form Complete” email within two weeks.

TK Registration

Once your child is offered a TK placement, parents have 15 days to register with the assigned school. To complete registration, you will need to submit the following documents to your assigned school:

Proof of age (birth certificate, passport, or other legal document)
Proof of residence (PG&E bill in parent name or approved Residency Affidavit and Instructions / Spanish)
Immunization records
Parent/guardian photo ID
Any current IEP or 504 plan, if applicable
TK Survey (pick up from your school office)

Make sure all documents are current and complete to finalize enrollment.
