Public Comment Guidelines for SSFUSD Board Meetings

PUBLIC COMMENTS - OUR UNWAVERING COMMITMENT TO HEARING EVERY VOICE:

The district remains committed to ensuring all constituents have multiple, meaningful ways to be heard. We will continue to promote and enhance the following established pathways:

1. In-Person Public Comment at Board Meetings:

This remains the primary, legally mandated method for the public to address the Board directly. It fosters a transparent and accountable environment in compliance with the Brown Act.

Members of the public are always welcomed to attend the school board meeting in person to provide live public comment. Public comments are limited to one to three minutes per individual (per Board Bylaw 9323). Name/address cards are placed in the back of the room to be completed and given to the secretary. The Board President will call upon individuals in random order who have requested to speak. Each person may only speak once, and is required to address the Board from the podium. The meeting is recorded and streamed live. Individuals may address the Board concerning school business not on the agenda, but public comment cannot be acted upon or discussed by the Board unless placed on the agenda at a subsequent meeting, in accordance with the law, the Brown Act. The Board may request staff to respond orally at the meeting or in writing at a future time.

The SSFUSD Board of Education does not act upon any matter that has not been previously placed on the agenda, except under limited circumstances as permitted by law. Matters raised during public comment may be referred to staff for further examination and/or action, where appropriate. Please note: Each speaker is limited to three (3) minutes unless otherwise informed by the Board President.

2. Email to the Board:

As always, the public may email the Board. Email addresses can be found on this page - https://www.ssfusd.org/apps/pages/school-board. All comments are received and reviewed by Board members.

3. Direct Contact with District Leadership:

The most effective path to resolving a specific problem is to speak directly with the administrators who can address it. We are committed to listening and partnering to solve challenges.

4. Scheduled Meetings:

We invite individuals to schedule meetings with district leaders for deeper, more productive dialogue on complex issues
