Employee Classification

A high quality workforce starts with clear and carefully developed job descriptions that reflect the scope of work for every classification. Because the roles and responsibilities of employees, their skill sets, and working conditions change over time due to technological and organizational advances, an efficient and effective organization must construct job families that link and build positions upon each other, creating defined career ladders within particular job classifications.

In January 2016, the South San Francisco Unified School District (SSFUSD) commissioned Ewing Consulting Services to conduct: (1) a classification study of all bargaining unit positions in the classified service in order to align job descriptions with current roles and responsibilities and (2) a market analysis of compensation in similar or like jobs in other districts.

Classified employees filled out a position information questionnaire and underwent interviews with Ewing Consulting Services. After reviewing and analyzing previous job descriptions and salary schedules, the firm created new job descriptions to accurately reflect the roles and responsibilities of the position and assigned all classified employees to a corresponding class and pay grade.

Ewing Consulting Services has assisted more 160 school districts, 40 community college districts, 30 county offices of education, and a number of other organizations over more than 28 years with providing human resource.

TB Testing

All employees must have a current negative TB test on file. New hires must provide proof of a negative TB test taken within the last  60 days. New TB tests are required every four (4) years.

Expiration dates for individual TB tests are included on every employee’s annual assignment memo that is mailed home in July.

Vacation and Sick Leave

Employees receive one day of sick leave per month of work (e.g., 10-month employees receive 10 days of sick leave per school year). Employees who work less than full-time will receive a portion of the ten days. Unused sick leave accumulates from school year to school year.

Full-time employees who work less than 12 months do not receive vacation.

Accumulated sick leave from past employment with California public schools may be transferred.
